Sinai in the Soul
By Harry Marcell

When G-d gave us the Torah of old

All our souls were at Sinai, we’re told.

Just every Jew who lived on earth,

And also those awaiting birth,

Were there that day when earth met sky

And heard G-d speak at Mt. Sinai.

They felt the fire on top of the Mount….

Jews from Manitoba, Jews from Rangoon
Jews from Jerusalem, Jews from Saskatchewan.
Jews from London, Jews from Kurdistan,
Jews from Long Island, Jews from Afghanistan.

Jews brown and white, Jews near and far,
Open Jews, closed Jews, Jews with doors ajar

Their souls were all there at Sinai
You, too, Joe, you too
You and I.
Say, that’s just a legend, said Joe.
You just prove that it really is so.
The Rav said, You’ve heard of Einstein,
The man who brought in space-time?
He thought up relativity,
So this is how it seems to me:
It’s the same if our souls went to Sinai
Or if Sinai went into our soul. Hi!

It’s Sinai in the soul, man,
    Sinai in the soul!

It’s not 3000 years away,
It’s here and now, today, today!

It didn ‘t just happen in olden time,

It’s deep in our subconscious mind,

it’s not then my boy, it’s now!

And I can tell you all just how:
It’s Sinai in the soul, man,
   Sinai in the soul!

When you start learning those words of old.
Cast in a 20th-century mould,
They strike a chord deep down, deep down,
Echoing round, resound, resound.
No more need for you to roam,
You ‘re sure that you ‘ye come home, come home.

It’s Sinai in the soul, man,
     Sinai in the soul;

When you come, as soon as you’re able
An honored guest at that warm Sabbath table,
The father King, the mother Queen,
The eager children in between,
Their faces lit with Shabbos glow….
Then you know, man, then you know….

It’s Sinai in the soul, man,
     Sinai in the soul;
