Tribute to the Memory of Rav Aryeh Carmel l zt"l

Sixty years ago I gained inspiration by attending the thought provoking שיעורי מוסר based on the duplicated notes of Rav Dessler, which Rav Aryeh ע”ה gave in his home in North London. In later years, as Rav in Manchester , I helped to extend some of his projects, the Yarchei Kallah and the Association of Orthodox Scientists, to the Manchester Community. He also lectured at our Manchester Jewish Study Union.
When Dvar Yerushalayim was in its second year, Rav Aryeh z"l moved to ירושלים, and became a partner in its development. He gave Shiurim in Gemara, Mussar, and Hashkafa. His popular Friday morning “Torah Insights” attracted people from far and wide. He also gave talks on Torah in the Modern World, both in the Yeshiva and at our Seminary Outreach programs. He prepared many learning Aids, produced tapes and videos and published brilliant articles for the Jewish Studies Magazine. He was a counsellor to teachers and students, establishing a personal impact on their growth in Torah.
At the same time he was editing and translating מכתב מאליהו, the commentary on ירושלמי זרעים, “Masterplan”, a modern adaptation of “Choreb” of Rav S.R. Hirsch, pervaded by the spirit of the giants of the Mussar Movement. דבריהם הם הם זכרונם.b
In the above quoted passage from Strive for Truth, Rav Dessler explains “Those who love Me will inherit BEING, in Hebrew יש . At the end of the Mishna, Rav Yehoshua ben Levi said “ In the future the holy One blessed be He will grant every צדיק וצדיק 310 worlds (numerical value of יש). This may refer to half of the 613 mitzvos and the 7 Rabbinical mitzvos (כתר תורה), which is the symbol of complete fulfillment of our duties. A person who works on his self improvement achieves one half; one who strives to influence others towards Torah is a צדיק וצדיק and achieves the other half.
This is hinted at in the principle כל ישראל ערבים זה בזה.

The letters in the ספר תורה which have dots add up to 310.
Rav Aryeh Carmell’s manifold deeds of lovingkindness, his inspiring teaching by word and by his writings, continue to live after him, their memory will bring blessing, זכרונו לברכה.
